Implicit Bias. We all have it. It’s the tendency to think that our perspective or experience is the Truth. I recall a story I heard as a child about three visually impaired people who were introduced to an elephant and then asked to describe it. One person took a hold of the trunk and said, “An elephant is like a snake.” Another person took hold of the elephant’s leg and said, “An elephant is like a tree. The third person took hold of the elephant’s tail and said, “An elephant is like a rope.” They were all right! But none […]

Look out! the Holy Spirit will be visiting a church near you during the month of August. I have been feeling the need for our community of faith to focus more intently on the powerful, passionate and purposeful Holy Spirit during these final weeks of the season of Pentecost so the Worship Team and I have designed Worship experiences that will not only honor God but enlighten and enliven our spirits. We will explore what it means to be Born of the Spirit on August 7th, Baptized by the Spirit on August 14th, Befriended by the Spirit on August 21st […]

Last week my pondering was a response to the cycle of escalating violence that we have been experiencing recently. Thanks to each of you who have taken the time to read my rant and respond. I appreciate your willingness to engage in a conversation and join me in prayer. One of the conclusions I have drawn in my quest to be a justice worker, graceful lover and instrument of peace is that this work begins within. This repeated violence is spiritually disturbing! Add to that, the pace at which most of us live and it is no wonder that many […]

This isn’t what I thought I’d be sharing here but during the Rays of Light rehearsal word came to us about the shooting of police officers in Baton Rouge, LA. Our Lay Delegate; Terry’s roommate at the General Conference has a brother who serves as the Police Chief in Baton Rouge so she stopped to try to contact her. We are thankful that he is physically unharmed. After rehearsal I tried to find out what I could about the situation. I was Student Clergy at the MCC in Baton Rouge and later served that congregation as Gap Pastor following hurricane […]

When was the last time you let God surprise you? I’ve just returned home from participating in the General Conference of our MCC movement. It was wonderful to reconnect with some of my MCC siblings that I only get to see in person every three years. It was also a blessing to be able to gather in Worship as a world-wide congregation. And there were all sorts of insights to be gained from plenaries, workshops and conversations. But the thing I will remember the most about this conference is the surprises it offered. I won’t go into all the details, […]

A Prayer for times like these: God our refuge and hope, when race, status, or gender divide us, when despondency and despair haunt and afflict us, when community lies shattered: comfort and convict us with the stillness of your presence, that we may confess all you have done, through Christ to whom we belong and in whom we are one. Amen. Reproduced from Revised Common Lectionary Prayers copyright © 2002

As I sit to write this I am torn about what to share with you, or maybe it is how to say it. My intention was to share in this message the spiritual principles that inspire millions of faithful Muslims to observe the holy month that we are now in the middle of; Ramadan’ and how I believe they overlap with the principles of Jesus’ way. But my soul has been injured by the news of the mass shooting, the worse ever in the U.S., apparently committed by a Muslim, at a predominately gay dance bar in Orlando frequented by […]

Unless you pay close attention to the source of lyrics for children’s hymns or attended West Point Military Academy you probably do not know who Anna Warner was. Anna and her sister, Susan, are the only civilians to be buried in the cemetery at the school and Anna is credited with the lyrics to “Jesus Loves Me”. But how both of these things happened is probably something only God could have foretold. Anna and Susan were daughters of a wealthy lawyer living in New York City and socializing among the elite in the 1830s. The Panic of 1837, however ruined […]
