What’s in your toolbox? I’m not talking about that thing or drawer you put your hammer and screwdrivers in. I’m talking about your spiritual toolbox. It’s important, and I believe part of the mission of our church, to insure you have the tools that will allow you to live as God created you and Jesus has shown you. I call that authentic living. Equiping people to live authentic lives has been a major part of my call as a Pastor. I believe it is an essential part of what the church is called to do in the 21st Century and […]

This past weekend was full of blessings! Imago Dei hosted the Preaching for All Saints and Sinners workshop. 16 people from various MCCs gathered to investigate what good preaching that offers hope to all looks like. In addition to new understandings new relationships were developed and existing relationships were strengthened. And our church was blessed with an incredible sermon by Rev. Dr. Kharma Amos whose words encouraged our relationship with God and those that we live with in these troubling times. Did you notice how many times I used the word relationship in the previous paragraph? It’s because this gathering […]

Surprise! God sometimes speaks to me in ways or at times that I don’t expect. Earlier this week my spirit was nudged into a deeper awareness of the kind of church that I believe God is calling Imago Dei to be. This is the kind of information is usually what I try to discern prior to a Congregational Meeting or in a group visioning process so that it can be made in a formal statement. But this time I was just sitting quietly when a deeper understanding quietly but clearly came to me in a powerful way. Surprise! What I […]

I am writing this as I sit looking out my balcony window across the lot and into the woods that surround the property. The trees are covered in a thin gray veil of mist. Last night I could barely see them because of the fog. There has always been something mysterious about the fog to me; it’s visible but not tangible, it has its own sense of being. It’s how I imagine the “shekinah” or shining presence of God spoken of as being visible in the older testament of our scriptures. There has been a lot of fog and mist […]

“You must be present to win.” I first heard that phrase in connection with a raffle. It wasn’t enough to buy the ticket that gave you a chance to win, you had to be physically present to claim your prize. There is a similar truth concerning Worship attendance. Attending corporate worship is one of the basic commitments we make when we become part of a faith community. But there is more to it than just the fulfillment of an obligation. The coming together of the beloved community honors God and it also helps to fulfill some of the basic needs […]

Sometimes I have to hear or read things several times before I understand what is really being said. That’s what happened to me when I was preparing for the Teaching I was to do as part of Worship this past Sunday. I’m sure I’ve heard or read the passage about the Maji many times but I had never full considered what they did once the ChristLight led them to where the infant Jesus was. The Gospel tells us what they did first was rejoice, then they worshiped him; but they also did something else. They offered him gifts (and not […]

The words of the ancient truth teller Isaiah speak to me this season of anticipation. In days to come the mountain of the Sovereign God shall be established as the highest of the mountains, and shall be raised above the hills; all the nations shall stream to it. Many peoples shall come and say, “Come, let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob, Leah and Rachel; that God may teach us the ways of God and that we may walk in the paths of God.” For out of Zion shall […]

Soon, very soon, we are going to see the ChristLight! It may be hard to believe but Christmas is just over 4 weeks away. For some this is the most wonderful time of the year and for others it is the most hectic. I hope, that in addition to whatever else you may do over these coming weeks you will also take time to intentionally focus on preparing to celebrate Christ as the light of the world. I am not trying to discourage you from whatever ways you may have planned to observe the days between now and Christmas. What […]

My Pastoral Report from our Annual Congregational Meeting is attached to message. I invite you to read and welcome any discussion you would like to have about it. I also offer the following poem by our member Gwynne Isaacs for your pondering. <><dexter Hey there, I know what you’re looking for. You came here from Houston, LA, Portland, Miami, Boston, wandering, searching, looking, looking for America. Every national park, every shrine, every monument, every tourist trap. Everybody took your money, took your time, took your patience, and you’re still looking, cause ya’ can’t quite find it, find the spirit, the […]

Imago Dei MCC’s Annual Congregational Meeting will be held on November 13th following worship. If you have an interest in the ministry of Imago Dei, particularly our future, I encourage you to be present. The Agenda will include the usual items for consideration in a business meeting; the receiving of reports from officers, proposal of an annual budget, and elections for positions on our Board of Stewards as well as our Lay Delegate. But the primary reason I am encouraging you to be present is because I believe this is a pivotal point in the history of our congregation and […]
