“You must be present to win.” I first heard that phrase in connection with a raffle. It wasn’t enough to buy the ticket that gave you a chance to win, you had to be physically present to claim your prize.
There is a similar truth concerning Worship attendance. Attending corporate worship is one of the basic commitments we make when we become part of a faith community. But there is more to it than just the fulfillment of an obligation. The coming together of the beloved community honors God and it also helps to fulfill some of the basic needs of those who gather. A healthy congregation gathered provides a place for participants to be heard, known and loved. The more regularly the church gathers the deeper those needs can be fulfilled. If attendance becomes sporadic the less opportunity there is to build relationships that help meet the needs. You must be present to win is true of some raffles. When it comes to Worship attendance, “you must be present to receive” is always true.
